Hillsboro School Board meets Tuesday to discuss local option levy, math and school scheduling

The Hillsboro School Board has a full agenda on Tuesday that includes a discussion about a local option levy.

The meeting starts with a work session at 6 p.m., during which the board will discuss a local option levy to help pay for district operations and a math adoption for grades six through eight. No decisions will be made.

At 7:30 p.m., the regular board meeting begins with the recognition of Hillsboro High School junior Savannah Loberger for her work on a girls-only science technology engineering and math (STEM) camp called "Girls Get IT."

The camp was aimed at girls in grades 7-12 and quickly reached its capacity of 40 students. The girls learned everything from circuits and the conducting of electricity, to robot programming and web-based game creation.

The board will move through various housekeeping items before reaching its resolution in support of a tax exemption for non-profit low-income housing. The board has debated the issue previously and will make a decision.

The board will review its enrollment numbers, which are up overall by 72 students despite a drop of 131 kindergartners. Those 72 kids will bring the district at least $432,000 in state funds.

Board members will receive an update on high school and middle school scheduling. The board has created two committees to study the existing schedules and suggest improvements, if necessary, to improve efficiency.
